The short story about Unicorn Dreams is that, in 1980, my dear friend Phil Ogison and I composed this elegant canon, upon which a simple repeating melodic line recurs again and again. As a synthesizer piece, such a minmal arrangement was evocative of Unicorns wistfully playing in some wonderfully blissful fantasy land. When I came to prepare this piece for Songs from the Shadows, I had composed this newer melodic line as something that would give Unicorn Dreams a greater melodic aspect for a piano performance. I am very happy with the original incarnation and my newer approach to Unicorn Dreams. When one considers the canon, it is clear that almost anything could be composed to play along with it as a perfect melody line. Possibly you could arrange your own version of Unicorn Dreams. The piece, because of its canon, is pregnant with possibilities...
